The brass buttons on my toy soldier uniforms gleamed under the weak afternoon sun filtering through my bedroom window. They were so small, so perfectly formed, each one a promise of adventure. I lined them up on the worn rug, their painted faces stern and ready. There was Sergeant Major Bolt, his tiny rifle held high, and Private Pip, always looking a little too eager. I remembered them so clearly, even now. They were still there, I knew, frozen in their valiant poses on my rug. My rug. My room. My home. A world away from the shimmering, cruel kingdom I now knew.

It felt like a dream, a vivid, terrifying dream that had swallowed my own life whole. One moment, I was whispering my deepest wish to the wind, a wish to be a real soldier, to fight real battles, to be brave and strong. The next… well, the next was a kaleidoscope of impossible colors and sounds, and then this. This land of fluttering wings and whispering leaves, of creatures both beautiful and broken.

I had been so thrilled at first. To be a soldier! My dream, realized in a way I’d never imagined. General Ironclad, with his steely gaze and his perfectly straight posture, had welcomed me. The training was hard, yes, but exhilarating. I learned to march, to salute, to hold myself with pride. The other recruits, with their fur and scales and feathers, were my comrades. And Sparklewing… she was my first real friend here, her gentle eyes holding a warmth that reminded me of my mother’s smile.
