The clang of steel was a brutal symphony, a sound I’d only ever heard in my head, a brave fanfare for my toy soldiers. Now, it was the sharp, sickening shriek of real metal, a sound that curdled the magic in the air. My own sword, once a gleaming promise of victory, felt heavy and clumsy in my hand. Before me, the Dictator’s forces, a sea of obsidian armor and cold, unblinking eyes, surged forward. They weren’t soldiers in the way I’d dreamed; they were automatons, their movements jerky and unnatural, like puppets with strings pulled by a malicious hand.

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird desperate for escape. Sparklewing’s tiny, shimmering form was tucked behind a gnarled root, her wings folded tight, her usually bright eyes wide with terror. The other creatures, the ones who had once greeted me with curious chirps and gentle nudges, were scattered, their vibrant colors dulled by fear. They were no longer a curious audience; they were the condemned.

“Stop!” I yelled, my voice cracking, a thin thread of sound against the roar of the advancing army. “You can’t do this! They’re not toys!”
