Chapter 16
The Heart of the Toy Box
Jan resolves to confront the Dictator directly, perhaps hoping to appeal to a shred of humanity or to exploit the weakness Sparklewing hinted at. He walks into the lion's den.
The air in the chamber was thick, not with the scent of pine needles or damp earth as I’d grown accustomed to, but with a cloying sweetness, like too many flowers wilting in a closed room. My boots, once so proud and shiny, felt heavy on the polished obsidian floor. Each step echoed, a lonely drumbeat against the vast silence. Sparklewing’s words, a fragile whisper of hope, had led me here. "The Heart of the Toy Box," she’d called it, a place where the Dictator kept his most treasured possessions, his ‘playthings,’ as he so crudely put it. She’d spoken of a hidden weakness, a vulnerability tucked away like a forgotten button in a doll’s forgotten drawer. I had to see it, had to try.
My dream of being a soldier had curdled. The gleaming brass buttons and heroic charges I’d imagined were now stained with the harsh reality of this kingdom. I’d seen the fear in the Flickerwings’ eyes, the way the Grumbleguts shuffled with their heads bowed, the forced smiles of the Pixie-folk plastered on their faces like poorly applied paint. This wasn’t bravery; it was bullying. This wasn’t a kingdom; it was a prison. And I, Jan, the little soldier who had so desperately wanted to belong, was part of the guards.
The corridor opened into a cavernous hall, far larger than any ballroom I’d ever seen in my old world. It was a kaleidoscope of impossible colors, illuminated by glowing crystals that pulsed with a soft, internal light. And everywhere, *everywhere*, were toys. Not the sturdy wooden soldiers of my childhood, nor the soft, cuddly creatures of Sparklewing’s glades, but intricate, breathtaking creations. Clockwork birds with jeweled eyes perched on gilded cages. Porcelain ballerinas twirled on music boxes that played haunting melodies. Miniature castles, complete with tiny banners and even tinier knights, stood sentinel on velvet pedestals. It was a wonderland of playthings, a monument to a child’s wildest fantasy, twisted into something profoundly unsettling.
