Jan, with Sparklewing's hesitant help, devises a desperate plan. It's a long shot, a child's idea against a tyrant's might, but it's their only hope to disrupt the Dictator's control.
The air in Sparklewing’s tiny, moss-lined den felt thick with unspoken fears. Outside, the perpetually dim light of the Whispering Woods seemed to press in, muffling the usual chirps and rustles. Jan sat cross-legged on the spongy floor, his toy soldier uniform feeling suddenly too big, too bright. Sparklewing hovered near the entrance, her iridescent wings quivering like delicate leaves in a breeze. Her large, multifaceted eyes, usually brimming with gentle curiosity, were clouded with distress.
“It’s… it’s just not fair, Sparklewing,” Jan whispered, his voice barely audible. He traced the worn edges of a pebble on the floor, a poor substitute for the gleaming brass buttons he’d once imagined. “He just… throws them away. Like broken toys.”
Sparklewing sighed, a sound like the rustle of dry leaves. “That is the way of the Dictator, Jan. He collects, he plays, and when he is bored, he discards.” Her voice was soft, laced with a weariness that Jan was only just beginning to understand. It wasn't just a sadness; it was the deep, ingrained sorrow of a creature who had seen too much.
