The polished brass buttons on my uniform gleamed under the strange, purplish light of this world, a light that used to fill me with such pride. Now, each glint felt like a tiny accusation, a reminder of the glorious soldier I’d dreamed of being, so different from the grim reality I was waking up to. My heart, once so eager to march, felt heavy, like a stone dropped into a deep, cold well. Not with a sword, not with a blast of magic, but with a casual, bored flick. The silence that followed was more deafening than any roar of battle. Sparklewing had covered her eyes then, her tiny, trembling form a picture of utter despair. I had wanted to run to her, to hold her, but my uniform, my training, my very role as a soldier, held me rooted to the spot, a helpless observer in this unfolding tragedy.
