The Dictator orchestrates a particularly cruel 'game,' forcing Jan to confront the depth of his evil. Jan witnesses the casual destruction of innocent lives for mere entertainment.
The grand hall, usually a place of glittering celebrations and booming pronouncements, felt thick with a different kind of energy today. It was the energy of anticipation, but not the joyful kind. It was the hushed, nervous sort that precedes a storm. I stood with the other soldiers, my polished boots gleaming under the strange, pulsating lights that hung from the ceiling like captured stars. Sparklewing was beside me, her tiny wings fluttering nervously against my arm. Her usual bright shimmer seemed dulled, her large, multifaceted eyes wide with a fear I was beginning to understand all too well.
The Dictator sat upon a throne that was less a seat of power and more a monstrous, jeweled spiderweb. It pulsed with a dark, inner light, and the Dictator’s form, shifting and indistinct, seemed to melt into its silken strands. Today, the Dictator’s voice, usually a silken whisper that could curdle milk, boomed with a cruel amusement.
"My dearest subjects," the voice echoed, laced with a chilling glee. "Today, we play a most amusing game! A game of chase, of capture, of… *refusal*."
