Sparklewing's Plea

Sparklewing, seeing Jan's distress, implores him to be careful. She reveals her fear, hinting at the danger of opposing the Dictator, but also a flicker of hope for change.

Sparklewing fluttered nearer, her iridescent wings casting a soft, dappled light on the damp forest floor. The air around us hummed with a nervous energy, a stark contrast to the usual cheerful buzz of this enchanted wood. I could feel her unease radiating from her like heat from a sun-warmed stone, and it mirrored the churning in my own stomach. My dream, the one I’d chased from my bedroom floor to this land of shimmering leaves and singing brooks, felt suddenly tarnished, like a beloved toy left out in the rain.

"Jan," she whispered, her voice barely a breath against the rustling leaves. Her large, luminous eyes, usually sparkling with mischief and wonder, were clouded with a deep, unsettling sadness. She landed on a mossy log beside me, her delicate antennae twitching. "You are troubled. I see it."

I tried to force a smile, but it felt brittle, like a dried leaf ready to crumble. "It's nothing, Sparklewing. Just… thinking."
