The Fading Colors

The magic of the land seems to dim under the Dictator's oppression. Jan's bright imagination struggles against the growing despair, and the lines between play and reality blur.

The once-vibrant colors of the Whispering Woods seemed a little less bright today. It wasn't that the sun had stopped shining, or that the leaves had lost their emerald sheen. It was something… subtler. Like a whisper of grey had begun to creep into the edges of everything, a faint dullness that Jan, with his sharp, observant eyes, couldn't ignore. He sat on a mossy stone, his toy sword, now a slightly tarnished real blade, resting beside him. Around him, the creatures of this magical land went about their day, but their movements, usually so full of joyous energy, felt a little more hurried, a little more subdued.

Sparklewing landed softly beside him, her iridescent wings fluttering with a sound like rustling silk. But today, the silk sounded a little frayed. "Jan," she chirped, her voice a little less musical than usual. "Are you watching the sky?"

Jan looked up. The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue, just as it always was. "It looks the same, Sparklewing. Why?"
