The next morning, the Little Kingdom hummed with excitement. As sunlight spilled over the rooftops, bursts of magic popped and fizzed in the air. Everywhere Elara looked, children practiced their tricks: some spun tiny whirlwinds, others balanced pebbles in sparkling towers, and a few even changed the color of the clouds above.

Elara wandered along the edge of the square, the daisy from Willow still tucked safely behind her ear. She watched the others, wishing she could join in. Her simple want—just to feel part of their world—felt bigger than ever today.

Near the fountain, Prince Leo stood with his friends in a circle. “Everyone ready for the contest?” he called, his voice ringing out like a bell. Children cheered and waved their magic in the air. Leo’s smile wavered for just a moment. Elara caught it—his hands trembled slightly before he tucked them behind his back, glancing at the gathering crowd.

Grom strutted toward the center, sparks dancing between his fingers. “Watch this!” he shouted, sending a ribbon of blue lightning crackling above everyone’s heads. The sparks whipped around, almost hitting the flower cart. A few children ducked and squealed. Grom’s grin looked wide, but his eyes darted nervously. Elara’s own eyes widened; she saw the blue light flicker too fast, his magic barely staying in his control.

She wanted to warn someone, but she felt invisible—just the girl with no power. Instead, she looked for little ways to help. She gently straightened toppled flowerpots and handed a dropped ribbon to a younger child who’d tripped. Every small act made her feel a tiny bit braver.

Willow found her by the quiet edge of the square. “You always see what others miss,” Willow said softly, her hands glowing as she healed a wilted petal. “That’s special, Elara.”

Elara hugged herself. “But it’s not magic.”

Willow smiled, her eyes kind. “Maybe not their kind. But sometimes, noticing is the most powerful thing.”

Just then, Leo called for everyone to gather. “Contest begins at noon! Show your brightest magic. Impress the kingdom!” His command made the crowd buzz with excitement and nervousness.

As children lined up, Elara glanced at Grom. He was muttering to himself, his arms crackling with even more wild energy. No one else seemed to notice how his magic sputtered out of rhythm, or how his confidence covered something shaky underneath.

Elara’s heart thudded. She needed to do something, but what?

She sat on the stone steps, pulling out her book to calm her nerves. As she flipped a page, a folded paper slipped out and fluttered to the ground. She picked it up. It was a map—old, drawn with swirling ink and curious symbols, showing secret corners and winding tunnels beneath the kingdom.

A new question sparkled in Elara’s mind—could this lead her to something she could do? Maybe her way into the contest wasn’t through magic at all. The daisy behind her ear glowed in the sunlight, and for the first time, Elara felt like she might be on the edge of her own adventure.

As the town clock chimed closer to noon and the magical children cheered, Elara traced the map’s path with her finger and whispered, “Maybe I have something powerful, too.”
