Chapter 4
Giants in the Storm
Larger, stronger elves try to calm the panicked reindeer, but their efforts fail. The herd's fear is too great, and Christmas Eve is in jeopardy. Traditional methods aren't working.
The wind howled like a famished wolf, tearing at the sturdy pine boughs that usually offered a comforting, evergreen embrace. Snow, thick and blinding, swirled in a chaotic dance, reducing the familiar world of the North Pole to a maelstrom of white. Inside the main barn, a different kind of tempest raged. The reindeer, magnificent creatures usually radiating a calm power, were a picture of pure terror. Their hooves stamped with a frantic rhythm against the packed earth, their wide, dark eyes reflected the flickering lamplight, and their low bellows of distress echoed the storm's fury.

His words, meant to be soothing, seemed only to agitate the herd further. A young doe, her flank trembling, shied away, nearly knocking over a stack of hay bales. Another, a powerful stag with antlers like ancient oak branches, pawed the ground with an alarming intensity, his breath steaming in the frigid air. The scent of fear was palpable, a sharp, musky odor that mingled with the hay and the cold.
