The little dragon, Starlight, huddled deeper beneath the prickly leaves of the overgrown bush. The world outside was a symphony of chirps and rustles, but Starlight’s world was a quiet, shimmering one. Her scales, usually a dull emerald, pulsed with a soft, inner light. It wasn't the fiery glow of a dragon’s breath, nor the warm blush of embarrassment. This was a cool, ethereal sparkle, like captured stardust, that seemed to emanate from her very being. She traced a claw along her flank, watching the tiny lights dance beneath her touch. Why her? Why did she shimmer when other dragons, even the smallest hatchlings, were just… dragon-colored?

A tiny, frantic buzzing interrupted her thoughts. A small, golden light zipped through the twilight air, weaving a zig-zag path between the blades of grass. It was Flicker, a firefly known for his boundless curiosity and his even more boundless energy. Flicker was always exploring, always asking questions, and tonight, his path led him right to the edge of Starlight’s leafy haven.

He hovered for a moment, his own light blinking rhythmically, his tiny antennae twitching. He’d seen many things in his short life – dewdrop diamonds on spiderwebs, the sleepy eyes of owls, the silent flight of moths. But he had never seen anything quite like the soft, persistent glow emanating from beneath that particular bush. It wasn't a reflection, nor was it the fleeting flash of a glow-worm. This was a steady, beautiful luminescence.

Hesitantly, Flicker drifted closer, his buzzing softening to a gentle hum. He peeked between the leaves, his tiny black eyes widening. There, curled up like a secret, was a dragon. A very small dragon, no bigger than a plump toad. And she was… sparkling.

“Hello?” Flicker’s voice was a tiny squeak, barely audible above the rustling leaves.

Starlight flinched, her sparkling intensifying for a moment before dimming as she tried to shrink even further into herself. She hadn’t expected anyone to find her, let alone speak to her. She kept her head tucked low, her emerald eyes peeking out from beneath a fringe of dark scales.

Flicker, undeterred, drifted closer. “Hello there! I couldn’t help but notice… you’re glowing.”

Starlight’s heart hammered against her ribs. She knew it. Everyone would notice eventually. She mumbled, her voice muffled by leaves, “I… I don’t know why.”

Flicker circled her slowly, his light illuminating the delicate shimmer of her scales. “You don’t know? But it’s so… pretty! Like a thousand tiny stars have landed on you.” He landed gently on a broad leaf near her head, his glow casting a warm circle on the damp earth. “My name’s Flicker. What’s yours?”

A long moment of silence stretched between them, punctuated only by the distant hum of the forest. Starlight finally lifted her head, her eyes meeting Flicker’s. She saw no judgment in them, only genuine wonder. “I’m… I’m Starlight,” she whispered, the name feeling both secret and true.

“Starlight,” Flicker repeated, his own light pulsing with delight. “That’s a perfect name for someone who sparkles so much! But really, you don’t know how it happens?”

Starlight shook her head, a tiny, mournful sigh escaping her. “It’s just… there. Always. When I was born, my mother said I was a perfectly normal dragon, but then… this started. It just got brighter and brighter.” She looked down at her claws, which now seemed to hold a faint, internal luminescence. “I try to hide it. Other dragons… they just look at me funny. They don’t sparkle.”

Flicker tilted his head, his antennae wiggling thoughtfully. “Well, I think it’s wonderful. It makes you special. But I understand wanting to know why. It’s like having a mystery right on your own scales!” He buzzed with excitement. “Maybe we can find out!”

Starlight’s eyes widened. “Find out? How? I don’t even know where to start.”

“The Whispering Woods!” Flicker declared, his voice filled with newfound purpose. “They say the oldest secrets of the forest are held there. Maybe there’s something in the woods that can tell us about your sparkle.”

Starlight hesitated. The Whispering Woods were rumored to be a place of ancient magic, of shadows and secrets. It was a place most creatures, especially shy little dragons, avoided. But Flicker’s enthusiasm was infectious, and the thought of finally understanding her sparkle, of not feeling so… out of place, was a powerful pull.

“The Whispering Woods?” she repeated, a tremor in her voice.

“Yes!” Flicker chirped, doing a little aerial loop. “It’s not so scary when you have a friend, is it? I can light the way! And you… well, you’ve already got your own light!”

Starlight looked at Flicker, his small, brave glow a comforting presence in the encroaching darkness. She looked at her own shimmering scales, which no longer felt like a burden, but perhaps, just perhaps, like a promise. A hint of courage, sparked by Flicker’s curiosity, began to bloom within her.

“Okay,” she said, her voice stronger this time. “Okay, Flicker. Let’s go to the Whispering Woods.”

Flicker buzzed with pure joy. “Wonderful! Follow me, Starlight! The adventure begins now!” He darted out from under the bush, his light a beacon, and Starlight, with a deep breath and a final glance at her sheltering bush, unfurled her wings, a trail of soft, sparkling light following her as she emerged into the twilight, ready to chase an answer and, perhaps, a new understanding of herself.
