Lily’s heart gave a little flutter, a hummingbird trapped in her chest. She clutched the little book, its plain cover warm against her palm. The words inside, her words, shimmered like captured moonlight. She’d dreamt of flying with dragons, of swimming in oceans of lemonade, of building castles from clouds, and each adventure had unfurled across the pages in elegant, looping script. But Mr. Grumbles… his frowns were like storm clouds that never seemed to break. His complaints about her “noisy” dreams, her imaginary games that spilled out into the quiet street, had made Lily’s own dreams feel a little less bright.

She sat on her porch swing, the book open on her lap. What could possibly cheer up Mr. Grumbles? He never smiled. He never waved. He just grumbled. Lily thought about what Mr. Grumbles liked. She’d seen him sometimes, peering over his fence, his eyes lingering on the splash of color from Mrs. Gable’s petunias next door. And once, when she was playing near his rose bushes, he’d muttered something about them being “properly pruned.” Flowers. He liked flowers.

A new thought, soft and gentle, began to form in Lily’s mind. What if she could dream up something for Mr. Grumbles? Not a loud, boisterous adventure, but something quiet and beautiful. Something that would make his eyes crinkle at the corners, instead of narrowing. She closed her eyes, picturing a place of peace, of soft colors and sweet scents.
