The wind howled like a hungry wolf around the thatched roofs, a mournful song that had been playing for weeks. Elara pulled her worn shawl tighter, the rough wool a poor defense against the biting chill that seemed to seep from the very stones of their village. This year, the harvest had been meager, a whisper of what it should have been, and the stores were dwindling faster than the daylight. A heavy blanket of worry had settled over her home, muffling the usual cheerful chatter and replacing it with anxious sighs and hushed conversations.

She watched from her small window as Old Man Hemlock, his back bent like a weathered branch, struggled to carry a meager bundle of firewood. His face, usually etched with a kindly smile, was drawn and pale. A pang of sympathy, sharp and familiar, pierced Elara’s heart
