The morning sun, a pale imitation of its former glory, painted the skeletal remains of skyscrapers in hues of bruised purple and smudged orange. John watched it climb, a ritual he’d performed for weeks, finding a sliver of comfort in its predictable ascent, a stark contrast to the chaotic descent of their world. Beside him, Lily stirred, her small body a warm weight against his side. Tom, ever the early riser, was already poking at the embers of their meager fire, his face smudged with ash.

“Morning, sleepyheads,” John murmured, his voice rough from disuse and the perpetual grit in the air. He nudged Lily gently. “Time to move.”

Lily blinked, her eyes, still holding the hazy remnants of dreams, focused on him. There was a quiet intensity in her gaze that John was still unaccustomed to, a knowing that belied her nine years. She’d been the one, after all, to find the abandoned farmhouse, tucked away like a forgotten secret behind a dense thicket of overgrown pines. It wasn't much, a shell of a home, but it had walls, a roof that mostly held, and a well that, thankfully, still yielded water. It was, for now, their sanctuary.
