The silence, when it finally descended, was a stranger more unsettling than any shriek or shudder. It wasn’t the absence of noise, but a profound, heavy stillness that pressed in on John, as if the air itself had been leached of sound. He held Lily and Tom close, their small bodies a familiar weight against his chest, and scanned the horizon. The skeletal remains of buildings clawed at a sky that was now a perpetual, bruised twilight, but the immediate fury of the collapse had passed. For now.

They had stumbled into something resembling a park, or what used to be one. A rusted swing set, its chains dangling like broken promises, stood sentinel over a patch of earth where tenacious, mutated weeds fought for dominance. A single, gnarled oak, miraculously spared, offered a meager canopy. It was here, beneath its twisted branches, that John felt the first, tentative tendrils of exhaustion loosen their grip. He sank to the ground, pulling the children onto his lap.

Lily, her nine-year-old face etched with a weariness that belied her years, leaned against his shoulder. Her eyes, usually so bright with curiosity, were shadowed, but still held a spark of an unnerving awareness. Tom, his six-year-old face buried in the crook of John’s neck, emitted a soft, rhythmic sigh, a sound of pure, unadulterated relief. They were safe. For this moment, they were safe.
