The chill of the autumn morning bit at Jack’s exposed skin as he stepped out of his car, the library keys cold and heavy in his hand. The sky was a bruised purple, promising rain or perhaps something worse. Today was the day. The prophecy’s day. He had barely slept, the cryptic words of the confession and the increasingly disturbing online chatter swirling in his mind like a malevolent fog. He glanced at his watch – 6:17 AM. The library didn’t open for another three hours, but he needed to be there. He needed to be ready.
He unlocked the heavy oak doors, the creak echoing in the pre-dawn silence. The familiar scent of old paper and dust, usually a comforting embrace, now felt charged with an unsettling energy. He walked directly to the circulation desk, the stack of books returned yesterday waiting like silent judges. He didn’t bother with the usual meticulous sorting. His gaze fell instead on the small, unassuming Chromebook, its screen still dark from the previous night. He powered it on, the familiar chime a stark contrast to the thrumming anxiety in his chest.
His fingers, usually so precise, trembled slightly as he typed in the search query he’d rehearsed a hundred times in his head: “John Welber location.” He scrolled through the results, ignoring the old news articles and forum posts. He needed something current, something that could lead him to the man himself. Then he saw it – a recent property tax record, publicly accessible, listing an address just outside of town, nestled deep in the woods. His heart hammered. It was real. This wasn't some anonymous internet phantom. John Welber was here, in their quiet little corner of the world.
