The calendar on Jack’s kitchen wall, a gift from Mrs. Henderson at the local bakery, stared back at him with an unnerving intensity. Each red circle, each hastily scribbled note about overdue books or library events, seemed to pulse with a quiet urgency. But it was the date circled in a thick, almost violent black marker that truly held his gaze: October 27th. Three days. Three short, impossibly long days until the ‘End of All Things,’ as the website so cheerfully proclaimed.

He’d barely slept since his dive into John Welber’s past. The air in his small, tidy house felt thick with unspoken questions, the silence punctuated by the hum of his refrigerator and the frantic whirring of his own thoughts. The meticulous order of his life, once a source of comfort, now felt like a fragile veneer, threatening to crack under the weight of the bizarre prophecy.

Jack ran a hand over his thinning hair, the stubble on his chin a testament to his neglect. He usually shaved every morning, a small ritual of control. Now, even that felt trivial. He walked to the window, pulling back the floral curtains that smelled faintly of lavender. Outside, the familiar street of Havenwood lay bathed in the pale, autumnal light. Mrs. Gable was watering her petunias, her bright pink watering can a splash of color against the muted brick of her house. Mr. Jenkins, the retired postman, was coaxing his dog, Buster, into a walk, the old terrier moving with a dignified slowness. It was all so normal, so mundane. How could a world like this, a world of petunias and Busters, be teetering on the brink of a localized apocalypse?
