Chapter 22
Episode 21
The light that pours through the split sky is not warm. It is not the gentle gold of dawn or the steady silver of the heavenly crown that hangs above the capital. It is the light of things buried too long, of truths left to rot in the dark, of names scratched from records and monuments and memory itself. It falls across the eastern valley like a blade, and every knight who stands beneath it feels the weight of what they have forgotten pressing against their skin.
Valerius the First stands at the threshold of the door, half-emerged, his form flickering between the man he was and the shape the wound made of him. His armor is the same as Commander Valerius bears now—the same sigil, the same lines—but older, scarred by something deeper than battle. His eyes are pale, not with blindness but with the effort of looking across centuries of silence. He does not speak at first. He simply stands, breathing air that should not remember him, and lets the light of the split sky wash over his face.
Kaelen feels the fire in his chest respond to that light, not with recognition but with grief. The ember that has grown in him through trial and surrender and the naming of forgotten things now bends toward Valerius the First as if toward a wound of its own. He steps forward, and Seraphina’s hand catches his arm.
