Chapter 17
Chapter 17: The Confession That Opens the Door
Kaelen and his companions reach the capital at dawn as the blight creeps toward the city walls. Kaelen demands an audience with the King and the full council, where he reveals the truth of Aldren — the knight who was sacrificed to the darkness by a council decree led by Lord Borin's father thirty years ago. Commander Valerius, confronted with the name he allowed to be erased, breaks his silence and confesses his own complicity. The King, shaken, issues a formal acknowledgment of the Kingdom's sin before the court. As the confession is spoken aloud, the cracks in the sky begin to shift — not closing yet, but changing, as if the door Aldren holds responds to the remembrance. Seraphina hears the Heavens confirm that the confession is necessary but not sufficient: the Kingdom must also bring Aldren home. Kaelen resolves to return east with the Kingdom's formal acknowledgment, but before they can depart, a messenger arrives from the eastern border — Rhea has fallen silent, and the door is failing. The chapter ends with Kaelen realizing they may already be too late.
The morning came the way a blade comes — slow, then sudden, and the suddenness was the thing that cut.
Kaelen stood at the edge of the plain where the road turned west and the walls of the capital rose like a sentence the earth had spoken long ago and never finished saying. The walls were white. They had always been white. The white was the color of the stone the Kingdom of Light was built from, the stone that the first builders had quarried from the mountain that the Heavens had touched, and the touching was the thing that made the stone white, and the white was the thing that the Kingdom had taken as its name, and the name was the thing that the morning was about to test.
The blight had reached the outer fields.
