Chapter 8
The Paradoxical Pawnshop
I discover a strange shop existing outside of time, selling 'temporal artifacts.' It's run by a quirky entity who might have the tools I need, for a price.
The flickering neon sign above the doorway read "The Paradoxical Pawnshop," and frankly, it looked like it had been cobbled together from spare parts of reality itself. One letter was a question mark, another a spinning hourglass, and the whole ensemble buzzed with an energy that tickled my teeth. I’d chased down more leads than a bloodhound with a caffeine addiction since the whole mess started, and this was the latest whisper on the wind, a rumour so outlandish it had to be true. A place that existed *outside* of time, selling… well, temporal artifacts. Naturally. After the whole planet turning into a glorified slag heap thanks to my little experiment, what was a little shop existing in a cosmic anomaly?
I nudged the door open, a bell tinkling a tune that sounded suspiciously like a sped-up version of a Gregorian chant. The air inside was thick with the scent of old parchment, ozone, and something vaguely like burnt sugar. Shelves lined the walls, crammed with objects that defied easy description. A pocket watch with hands that spun backward, a quill that seemed to drip ink made of starlight, a pair of spectacles that, when I squinted, showed faint echoes of past and future events superimposed on the present. It was less a shop and more a museum of things that shouldn’t exist.
Behind a counter that looked suspiciously like a polished meteorite, sat a creature that made my eyebrows do a frantic jig. It was small, with skin the colour of a bruised plum, and eyes that held the swirling colours of a distant nebula. It wore a waistcoat made of what looked like woven shadows, and it was meticulously polishing a monocle with a tiny, translucent cloth.
