Right, so, things were… well, they were *bad*. Not just ‘forgot to pick up milk’ bad, but ‘the sky is the color of a bruised plum and the only thing growing is mutated, vaguely-sinister-looking broccoli’ bad. My little workshop, once a haven of hopeful tinkering, now looked like a bomb had gone off in a particularly enthusiastic disco. Wires sparked, strange goo dripped from the ceiling (still not entirely sure what that was, and honestly, I’m trying *not* to find out), and the air hummed with a low, unsettling thrum. It was the sound of reality being thoroughly, unequivocally, and hilariously broken. And me? I was the idiot who’d snapped the elastic band.
I’d been staring at the flickering remains of my sonic resonator, a contraption I’d affectionately nicknamed ‘The Woofer,’ when I heard it. Not the usual creak of my rickety shed or the distant wail of something that used to be a siren. No, this was a… a *presence*. A heavy, suffocating weight that settled over the landscape like a shroud woven from pure dread. My gut, which had been doing a fair impression of a washing machine on spin cycle for weeks, lurched violently.
“Oh, for the love of… what now?” I muttered, my voice cracking like a teenager’s. I’d been expecting the usual spectral thugs, the shadowy figures that flitted at the edges of my vision, whispering threats in languages that made my teeth ache. But this was different. This felt… *official*.
