Chapter 14
The Final Temporal Stitch
The climax! I use my knowledge and newfound resilience to perform the ultimate temporal repair, facing down the demonic forces and divine indifference one last time.
The air tasted like burnt toast and regret. Not a metaphor, mind you, but an actual, lingering, acrid tang that clung to the back of my throat and reminded me, with every breath, of the monumental mess I’d made. Chapter 14, they called it. “The Final Temporal Stitch.” Sounds neat and tidy, doesn’t it? Like mending a ripped sock. Hah. If only. My life had become less about mending and more about frantically patching holes in reality with whatever scraps of sanity I could find, usually while being chased by things that looked like they’d crawled out of a particularly bad dream after a night of questionable chili.
The landscape stretched out before me, a testament to my particular brand of genius. Once, this was a bustling city, full of people rushing to work, arguing over parking spaces, and generally living their wonderfully mundane lives. Now? It was a jagged collection of skeletal skyscrapers, choked by dust that shimmered with an unholy light, and populated by… well, let’s just say the local wildlife had evolved. And not in a cute, fluffy way. Think more along the lines of razor-toothed, multi-limbed nightmares that had a penchant for chasing anything that moved. And I, Nathaniel Seymour, was the prime mover.
My immortality, a gift that felt more like a cosmic curse, meant I could take a beating that would turn a lesser man into a smear on the pavement and still be up for round two. It also meant I had an eternity to contemplate the sheer, unadulterated stupidity that had led me here. It all started with a hum, a shimmering curtain of light in my cramped workshop, a desperate attempt to find a way out of the endless cycle of poverty. And then… *whoosh*. Temporal displacement. Demonic hordes. A planet that looked like it had gone ten rounds with a cosmic blender. And now, this. The grand finale. The final stitch.
