The air crackled, not with the usual ozone tang of temporal displacement, but with a distinctly… familiar scent. Like damp cardboard and desperation. I landed with a less-than-graceful thud on what felt suspiciously like a discarded mattress. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light slicing through a grimy window, illuminating a scene of profound, almost artistic, neglect. This was my life, distilled into a single, squalid room. Except, it wasn’t *my* life. Not precisely.
A figure stirred in the corner, a shadowy silhouette hunched over a workbench that looked suspiciously like a collection of upturned crates. He coughed, a dry, rasping sound that echoed the weariness I felt deep in my bones. “Another one?” the voice croaked, and I swear, it was like listening to a recording of myself, played on a warped tape.
