Chapter 4
Leo's Helping Hand
Seeing the scattered books and Giggles' flustered state, Leo feels a pang of empathy. He overcomes his hesitation and steps forward, offering to help Giggles tidy up the playful disaster.
Leo watched from his usual quiet corner, his nose practically glued to the pages of a book filled with silly riddles. The air in the Laugh-a-Lot Library buzzed with a special kind of energy today, a little more boisterous than usual. He’d heard the frantic rustling, the muffled squeaks, and then the undeniable thud that had sent a cascade of colorful books tumbling from their shelves. Now, a small, whirlwind of a character, bright as a primary-colored crayon, was frantically trying to gather the scattered pages. This was Giggles.
Giggles, a character Leo had only seen peeking out from the pages of joke books, was a riot of mismatched socks and a grin that seemed permanently stitched onto their face. Today, however, that grin looked a little strained. Giggles’ usually bouncy movements were a flurry of panicked flapping as they scooped up books, their laughter replaced by little “oops!” and “oh dear!” sounds. The display of joke books, meant to be neatly stacked, was now a delightful, but chaotic, mess of open pages, fallen covers, and illustrations peeking out at odd angles. A particularly large book, boasting a picture of a pie-in-the-face, lay open, its pages splayed like a wounded bird.
Leo’s heart did a funny little flip. It wasn't a fear-flip, or a shy-flip, but more of a… a sympathetic-flip. He knew what it was like to feel overwhelmed, to wish you could rewind a moment and make things right. He saw Giggles’ wide, slightly worried eyes darting around, and a wave of understanding washed over him. It was easy to get carried away, especially when you were filled with so much energy, so much… giggles.
