The late afternoon sun, a gentle, buttery haze through the canopy of the Whisperwood, dappled the clearing where their village now stood. Liam, his hands still dusted with the fine, ochre soil from his latest tending of the sky-berries, watched his mother move with practiced ease between her meticulously kept garden and the open doorway of their home. Her laughter, bright and clear, carried on the breeze as she teased Leo about some forgotten chore. It was a sound that, even after all this time, could still send a pang of bittersweet remembrance through him, a ghost of the life they had left behind.
