The rhythmic rasp of his knife was a familiar sound now, a counterpoint to the chirping of unseen creatures and the distant murmur of the river. It had been months since they’d tumbled into this world, months of relentless adaptation, of building, of learning to live. The initial panic had subsided, replaced by a quiet, persistent hum of survival. They had a village now, a collection of sturdy huts nestled against the gentle slope of a hill, a testament to their collective will.

Sarah approached, her footsteps soft on the packed earth. She carried a basket laden with plump, jewel-toned berries, their sweetness a welcome contrast to the often bland, starchy roots they relied on. She sat beside Liam, her gaze drifting over the nascent village. A small smile touched her lips, but her eyes held a familiar flicker of something else – a tenderness tinged with a deep, unspoken worry.

“These are exceptionally sweet today, Liam,” she said, offering him a handful.
