The morning sun, a soft, diffused gold through the emerald canopy, found Liam already awake. He’d slept fitfully, the weight of Molly’s words from the previous day settling like a damp cloak over his thoughts. He’d chosen to dismiss them then, to focus on the immediate needs of the burgeoning village – the repair of a tool, the charting of a new edible plant, the gentle coaxing of a hesitant fire. But now, with the quiet of the early hours, her accusations, sharp and barbed, pricked at his resolve.

He watched as Sarah, his mother, moved with her characteristic quiet efficiency, tending to the small garden patch they’d painstakingly cultivated. Her hands, once accustomed to the sterile cleanliness of hospital wards, were now stained with rich, dark soil, a testament to their new reality. Mark, his father, was already by the edge of the village, his broad shoulders set as he sharpened a crude axe, the rhythmic rasp of stone against metal a familiar sound, a promise of security.

“Morning, sleepyhead,” Sarah’s voice, warm and melodic, broke through his contemplation. She offered him a small, lopsided smile as she wiped a smudge of dirt from her cheek.
