The sun beat down like a blacksmith’s hammer on an anvil, each ray a searing brand against my sweat-soaked uniform. We’d been running for hours, the stagecoach a bucking bronco on the cracked earth, dust devils dancing in our wake like spectral hounds. Wild Bill’s knuckles were white on the reins, his face a mask of grim determination. I’d seen him like this before, when a wheel threatened to splinter or a storm brewed on the horizon, but this was different. This was the gnawing fear of being hunted, the primal instinct of prey.

Behind us, the echoes of Broken Nose’s war cries had faded, replaced by the unnerving silence of the vast, indifferent desert. But silence, out here, was rarely a comfort. It was the quiet before the next storm, the breath held before the pounce. We’d managed to outrun the main force, a feat I still couldn't quite comprehend. It felt less like outrunning and more like the desert itself had swallowed us, for a time, spitting us out into a new, more treacherous kind of danger.

“How much farther, Bill?” I rasped, my throat as dry as the sand beneath us. My canteen had been empty since dawn, and the thought of water was a mirage I was desperately trying to avoid.
