The air in the stagecoach had been thick with unspoken fear, a palpable thing that clung to the worn upholstery and the sweat on our brows. But now, after the dust had settled and the last of the fighting had faded into the vast, indifferent desert, a different kind of tension coiled in the cramped space. It was the quiet after the storm, the uneasy stillness where the damage is assessed and the true cost begins to reveal itself. Elias, bless his steady hands, had managed to bind my arm, his touch gentle despite the grime and blood that coated us both. He’d offered me water from his canteen, a gesture of kindness that felt like a lifeline in the suffocating heat. But my gaze kept drifting to Sarah.
She sat across from me, her usually composed features now etched with a weariness that went deeper than physical exhaustion. Her hands, which had been so steady when she’d helped Elias with the wounded, now trembled slightly as she clutched a small, leather-bound journal to her chest. It was the journal, I suspected, that held the key to this whole bloody mess.
“Sergeant,” Elias murmured, his voice raspy. “You should rest. We’ve a long way to go, and I doubt this is the end of our troubles.”
