The air, thick and heavy with the scent of dust and fear, pressed down on us like a shroud. The cacophony of battle had faded, replaced by the ragged breaths of the living and the chilling silence of the dead. We were pinned, hemmed in by the jagged teeth of the canyon walls, the stagecoach a broken-winged bird amidst the carnage. My gaze swept over the scene, each fallen soldier, each lifeless passenger, a fresh stab to the gut. The secret I carried, the ghost of Corporal Davies’ last breath, seemed to claw at my throat, threatening to choke me.

Then, a sound. Not the crack of a rifle, nor the hiss of an arrow, but a low, guttural rumble that vibrated through the very earth beneath my boots. The ground beneath us began to tremble, a subtle tremor at first, then growing in intensity. Loose stones skittered down the canyon walls, and the remaining wheels of the stagecoach groaned in protest.

“What in blazes is that?” Wild Bill’s voice, usually a gravelly rasp, was laced with a new kind of dread.
