The Hunter and the Hunted
The pursuit is relentless. The warriors, regrouping, track the fleeing survivors. The desert, once a barrier, now becomes a weapon in a desperate game of cat and mouse.
The sun beat down, a malevolent eye in the bleached sky, and every breath was a rasp against parched lungs. Dust devils danced in the distance, mocking our desperation. We were the prey now, the hunters of yesterday reduced to fleeing rabbits. The canyon had spat us out, but the desert, in its vast, indifferent cruelty, had swallowed us whole. Sergeant MacDougal, his face a mask of grim determination, kept his eyes fixed forward, his rifle held loosely but ready. He’d seen too much, lost too much, and the weight of it all was etched into the lines around his eyes.
“How much further, Bill?” he grunted, his voice rough as sandpaper.
Wild Bill Hitchcock, his weathered face set in a permanent scowl, spat a stream of tobacco juice into the swirling dust. “Far enough that the buzzards ain’t found us yet, Sergeant. That’s all the countin’ I do.” He flicked the reins, urging the weary horses onward. They were as spent as we were, their flanks lathered, their eyes rolling with exhaustion.
