Chapter 12
Echoes of the Past
MacDougal's guilt resurfaces. A moment of intense danger triggers a memory of his fallen comrade. The battle's brutality forces him to confront his own demons and his capacity for both ruthlessness and compassion.
The crack of a rifle shot, sharp and sudden, tore through the ringing silence that had settled over the canyon floor. It was a sound that vibrated not just in my ears, but deep in my bones, a familiar, unwelcome herald of the chaos that was still very much alive. My knuckles, white and slick with sweat, tightened around the worn stock of my rifle. The air, thick with the acrid tang of gunpowder and the coppery scent of blood, pressed in on me, heavy and suffocating. "MacDougal! Get your head out of the clouds!" Elias’s voice, rough and urgent, jolted me back to the present. He was crouched beside me, his face a mask of grim determination, his own rifle spitting fire. The stagecoach, our fragile sanctuary, groaned under the strain of more arrows than I cared to count. Passengers huddled within, their faces pale and etched with terror. Sarah Jenkins, the quiet woman with the surprisingly steady hands, was tending to a wounded man, her movements precise and calm despite the pandemonium.
