Chapter 11
Broken Nose's Resolve
The warrior Broken Nose, driven by a past injustice, surveys the aftermath. His pride is wounded, his resolve hardened. He grapples with the cost of his people's struggle.
The dust still hung thick in the air, a gritty shroud that clung to everything, to the sweat on my brow, the grime on my rifle, the raw ache in my lungs. It tasted of copper and defeat, a bitter mouthful that I swallowed down with the last of my water. Around me, the carnage of the canyon lay exposed in the unforgiving glare of the midday sun. Twisted metal, splintered wood, and the quiet stillness of the fallen told a story that needed no telling. We’d held them, somehow. Against all odds, against the sheer, crushing weight of their numbers, we’d held them. But the cost… the cost was etched into the faces of the few of us left, a grim testament to the fury we’d weathered.
My gaze drifted, scanning the makeshift perimeter we’d established. Sergeant Miller, his arm wrapped tight in a bloody bandage, was trying to coax a dying ember back to life. Young Private Davies, his eyes wide and vacant, sat with his back against a rock, his rifle clutched like a lifeline. And Wild Bill, his face a mask of stoic weariness, was methodically checking the horses, his movements slow and deliberate, as if each action was a prayer against further loss.
Then I saw him. Standing a good distance away, near the lip of the canyon where the morning had erupted in a storm of arrows and war cries, was Broken Nose. He was alone, a solitary figure against the vast, indifferent expanse of the desert. His chest, bare save for a necklace of teeth, rose and fell with the steady rhythm of a man who had seen much, and endured more. His face, a roadmap of past battles, was impassive, his dark eyes fixed on the scene below. There was no triumph in his stance, no exultation. Just a profound, almost weary stillness.
