The air, thick with the metallic tang of blood and the acrid bite of gunpowder, still vibrated with the echoes of the recent slaughter. My ears rang, a constant, dull throb that mimicked the pounding in my chest. We were survivors, a ragged, blood-spattered few, huddled together in the graveyard of the stagecoach, its once proud frame now a splintered, smoking ruin. The desert, indifferent to our plight, stretched out in every direction, a vast, silent expanse of ochre and bone.

Beside me, Elias, bless his steady hands, was tending to a gash on Sergeant Miller’s arm, his face a mask of grim concentration. The usual boisterous camaraderie that had filled the coach just hours before was gone, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the whimpers of the wounded and the rasping breaths of those trying to conserve their strength.

My gaze drifted to Sarah Jenkins. She had been a shadow for most of the journey, a woman who seemed to shrink into the worn upholstery of the coach, her eyes wide and perpetually anxious. Now, she was… different. The fear that had been a constant companion was still there, etched in the tremor of her hands, but it was overlaid with something else, something steely and determined. She moved with a quiet purpose, her gaze sharp as she surveyed our meager supplies, her movements surprisingly deft as she helped Elias bandaged wounds.
