Chapter 5
Race Against the Void
With the Horos' influence growing, Elias must decipher the artifact's secrets. He needs to either control or neutralize its immense power before it triggers a global catastrophe. Allies are found in desperation.
The air in Elias’s small apartment, usually thick with the scent of old paper and stale coffee, now crackled with a different kind of energy. It was the hum of the artifact, a low thrumming that vibrated not just through the desk it rested upon, but deep within his bones. He’d spent days poring over the translated glyphs, the painstaking process a blur of sleepless nights and gnawing anxiety. The celestial charts, once mere academic curiosities, now pulsed with a terrifying significance. The alignment was imminent, a cosmic ballet choreographed by forces Elias was only beginning to comprehend.
He traced a finger over a particularly intricate symbol on the artifact, a spiral that seemed to twist inward upon itself, promising both infinity and oblivion. Dr. Aris Thorne’s notes, salvaged from a dusty archive, had been Elias’s only guide. His uncle, a man Elias had once dismissed as a crackpot obsessed with fringe theories, had been terrifyingly prescient. The scribbled entries spoke of cycles, of cosmic tides, of an entity that periodically brushed against Earth, its passage marked by ripples of chaos. The Horos. Not a civilization, but a primordial force, a consciousness unbound by flesh and bone. And the artifact, Elias now understood, was a key. A conduit.
The rhythmic tapping at his window jolted him from his trance. He froze, his heart hammering against his ribs. He’d been so consumed, he’d forgotten the basic precautions. He crept towards the window, peering through a gap in the blinds. A figure stood silhouetted against the sodium glow of the streetlamp, a woman. Her face was obscured by the shadows, but there was an air of purpose about her, an unnerving stillness that spoke of more than just a late-night visitor.
