Lynn navigated the familiar, cracked streets of Havenwood, each step crunching on dust that felt as ancient as the town itself. The air, usually thick with the scent of dry sage and baked earth, now carried a faint, cloying sweetness, like overripe fruit left too long in the heat. It was a scent that had become more pronounced in recent weeks, a subtle, insidious perfume of decay that clung to everything.
She was heading to Jade’s. A knot of unease tightened in her stomach, a familiar companion these days. Jade, her oldest friend, the one with eyes like summer skies and a laugh that used to chase away the dust motes dancing in the sunlight. Jade had been… different. Quieter.
