Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the faded ink that spoke of land grants, civic duties, and a pact. A pact that felt chillingly familiar, echoing the hushed tones of Old Man Hemlock’s tales.
Her grandfather’s journal lay open beside the charter, its leather cover cracked and worn.
