The air in Lynn’s small room felt thicker than usual, heavy with the scent of dust and something else, something metallic and sharp like a forgotten fear. Old Man Hemlock’s words, a tangled skein of riddles and half-truths, still echoed in her mind. *“The past is not a grave, child. It’s a seed. And some seeds, when disturbed, sprout into nightmares.”* He’d pressed the cool, smooth stone into her hand, its surface etched with symbols that seemed to shift and reform when she wasn't looking directly at them. The relic, he’d called it, a key. But to what?

Lynn traced the intricate patterns on the stone with her fingertip. It hummed faintly beneath her touch, a low vibration that seemed to resonate deep within her bones. Hemlock had spoken of her mother, of a lineage tied to the very foundation of this sun-baked town. He’d mentioned a “balance,” a “reckoning,” words that swirled around her like the dust devils that danced on the horizon. But the details remained elusive, obscured by the fog of her own fractured memories.

She closed her eyes, focusing on the faint thrum of the relic. It was like a tuning fork, vibrating in response to some unseen frequency. Images flickered behind her eyelids, disjointed and ephemeral. A child’s laughter, sharp and clear, cut through the silence. Then, a flash of blinding light, followed by a deafening roar. Smoke choked the air, and the acrid smell of burning wood filled her nostrils. A woman’s scream, raw with terror, tore through the chaos. Lynn’s mother. The memory was a phantom limb, aching with a pain she couldn’t quite place.
