The encroaching darkness wasn't just a metaphor anymore; it was a palpable force, its tendrils tightening around the town’s fragile existence.
One evening, as the bruised sky bled into a murky twilight, a scream tore through the quiet. It came from the general store, the hub of what little community remained. Lynn, her heart a frantic bird against her ribs, was already on her feet, the strange, cool weight of the amulet nestled beneath her shirt a familiar, yet still unnerving, presence. She didn’t need to be told; the raw terror in the cry was a language she was beginning to understand.
She found Sheriff Brody already there, his broad frame filling the doorway, his face a mask of grim impatience. Inside, Mrs. Gable, usually a fixture of rosy-cheeked resilience, was huddled in a corner, her eyes wide and vacant, muttering about the shelves. “They just… fell,” she stammered, her voice a reedy thread. “Everything. Cans clattering, jars shattering. Like something… pushed them. Something with no hands.”
