Chapter 6
The First Trial
The trio faces their first real danger as they are ambushed by the Shadow Weaver's minions. Mahershalalhashbaz must learn to control his nascent powers to survive.
The forest floor, usually a tapestry of dappled sunlight and rustling leaves, had taken on a muted, oppressive tone. The air hung heavy, not with the scent of pine and damp earth, but with a chill that had nothing to do with the season. Mahershalalhashbaz, Elara, and Roric moved with a cautious urgency, their senses heightened, each snap of a twig sounding like a thunderclap in the unnerving silence. He kept it tucked into his pocket, a secretive gesture that Elara, ever observant, noticed.
"The further we venture from the ruins, the more the world seems to hold its breath," Elara replied, her eyes scanning the dense undergrowth. Her brow was furrowed, a familiar sign that her scholar’s mind was piecing together fragmented observations. "It’s as if the very trees are wary of our presence."
