The air grew heavy, thick with a silence that pressed in on Elara’s ears. It wasn’t the peaceful quiet of a sleeping world, but a suffocating hush, as if the very breath of the planet had been stolen. Shadows, deeper and more solid than any she’d known, stretched from everything, swallowing the familiar shapes of trees and houses. The world, once vibrant with the colors of late afternoon, was bleeding into shades of grey and inky black. It felt like the moment right before a storm breaks, but this storm was different, a storm of judgment that had already passed, leaving behind a strange, unnerving calm.

Elara pulled her knees to her chest, her worn, patched jeans a familiar comfort against her skin. They felt somehow more real than the shifting, darkening world around her. She could feel the faint tremor of fear running through the other children, a silent chorus of unease that vibrated in the stillness. Even Kael, usually so full of restless energy, was unnaturally still beside her, his gaze fixed on the encroaching gloom.

“It’s… so dark,” Kael whispered, his voice barely a breath. He reached out, his hand hovering near Elara’s. He didn’t touch her, but the unspoken offer of comfort was a tangible thing between them.
