The beam of Kelly’s flashlight, a fragile thread of light in the oppressive dark, danced across the rough-hewn walls of their new reality. Each flicker illuminated a landscape alien and breathtaking, a stark contrast to the familiar greens and browns of the world they’d lost. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and something floral, something *new*, pressed in on them, a constant reminder of their entrapment. Behind them, the deafening roar of falling rock had subsided, replaced by an unsettling silence that echoed the hollowness in Kelly’s chest.

Her five cubs, usually a whirlwind of playful energy, huddled close, their small bodies trembling. Milly, ever the most attuned to her mother’s unease, pressed her head against Kelly’s flank, her breath a soft puff against the wolf’s fur. And Kevin, the most boisterous, was unusually subdued, his tail tucked low, a silent testament to the gravity of their situation.

Kelly nudged Milly with her nose, a soft rumble in her chest. “It’s alright, little one,” she murmured, her voice a low, comforting cadence. “We’re together. That’s what matters.” But even as she spoke the words, a tremor ran through her. Together, yes, but where were they? And how would they ever get out? The weight of being the last of her kind, the sole protector of this fragile brood, settled upon her like a physical burden.
