Chapter 14
Guardians of the Passage
Following Kevin's discovered path, they find it blocked by larger, territorial creatures who guard the way forward with a low growl.
The air grew thick and heavy, carrying a scent that was both earthy and musky, a warning that prickled the fur along Kelly's spine. They reached Kevin, who was sniffing the air with renewed urgency. "It’s… bigger in here, Mama," he whispered, his voice hushed with a mixture of awe and apprehension. Kelly nudged him aside, peering into the darkness. The fissure opened into a wider tunnel, the walls here not smooth and polished like the earlier sections, but rough and uneven, as if carved by something ancient and powerful. The air was cooler, carrying the faint, damp scent of moss and something else… something alive.
