The air grew damp, a cool, earthy breath that hinted at secrets held deep within the stone. Kelly’s ears twitched, catching a low, constant murmur that seemed to weave through the very rock. It was a sound unlike the unsettling silence of the deeper passages, a gentle, persistent hum that spoke of movement, of life, of a path. Her cubs, weary but ever alert, followed her lead, their small paws padding softly on the uneven ground. Milly, ever the observer, tilted her head, her large eyes reflecting the dim glow of Kelly’s flashlight, a faint beam cutting through the perpetual twilight.

“Mama,” Milly whispered, her voice barely a breath, “what is that sound?”

Kelly nudged her gently with her nose. “It’s water, little one. A river, I think.” Her own heart quickened. Water meant life, and in this strange, suffocating darkness, life was the most precious commodity. It also meant a potential way out, a current that might lead them back to the sun-drenched world they had lost.
