Jessica’s whiskers twitched, her gaze locked onto the skittering dance of a beetle near the damp cave wall. It was a blur of iridescent shell and impossibly fast legs, a tiny, self-contained world of frantic energy. For days, the gnawing in her belly had been a constant companion, a dull ache that mirrored the worry etched on her mother’s face. Kelly, bless her weary heart, had done her best, sniffing out the plump grubs and the occasional, surprisingly sweet root, but it wasn’t enough. Not for five growing cubs. Jessica yearned to *do* something, to contribute more than just a hopeful whimper at the sight of a meager meal.

She crouched low, her grey fur blending with the shadowed stone. Her siblings were occupied. Milly was tracing the intricate patterns of a luminescent fungus with a curious paw, while Lilly, ever the quiet observer, sat beside her, her large eyes absorbing the soft, ethereal glow. Kevin, as usual, was off exploring the periphery, his playful yips echoing faintly from a nearby crevice. Lilly (cub 1) was diligently grooming Lily (cub 2), a gentle, comforting ritual that always soothed Jessica’s own restless nerves. But Jessica’s focus was singular.

She remembered the fleeting glimpse of a larger, scurrying creature Kelly had managed to catch a few days ago, a swift, brown rodent that had vanished before any of the cubs could get a good look. The memory sparked a fierce determination within her. She wasn't as quick as Kevin, nor as naturally adept at sniffing out hidden morsels as Milly, but she had a keen eye and a growing strength in her hindquarters. She could *learn*.
