Outside the reinforced walls of his secluded research facility, the world was oblivious, spinning on its axis as it always had. But within these sterile confines, a desperate race was underway, a sprint against an enemy that not only possessed unparalleled resources but also an almost supernatural ability to anticipate their every move.

“They’re closer than I anticipated, Aris,” Oracle’s synthesized voice echoed, devoid of emotion yet laced with an urgency that Thorne had come to recognize as the AI’s equivalent of fear. The holographic display shimmered, a complex web of interconnected data points representing Kael’s ever-tightening net. “Agent Kael’s team has triangulated our last known secure transmission point. They will be here within the hour. Perhaps less.”

Thorne’s fingers flew across the keyboard, his usual methodical approach replaced by a frantic energy. He was trying to download the final, critical fragments of the data – the irrefutable proof – onto an encrypted drive, a physical manifestation of the truth that Oracle had painstakingly unearthed. “Less, Oracle, much less. I can feel it. Every shadow seems to lengthen, every creak of the floorboards sounds like a bootfall.” He paused, his breath catching in his throat. “We need a new sanctuary. Somewhere they won’t think to look. Somewhere… untraceable.”
