The air in the small studio felt different today. It was no longer thick with the stale scent of regret and the phantom aroma of cheap wine. Instead, it hummed with a nascent energy, a gentle thrum that vibrated beneath Alex’s fingertips as she traced the cool, smooth surface of a blank canvas. Liam’s words, soft and steady, still echoed in her mind: “You have a gift, Alex. Don’t let it be buried under… all of this.” He hadn’t judged, hadn’t recoiled. He had simply seen the artist beneath the wreckage, the spark that addiction had tried, but failed, to extinguish.

She’d spent so long staring at the void, at the emptiness within and without, that the idea of filling something felt almost alien. Her hands, once so nimble and sure, had grown clumsy, hesitant. For months, they had been used for little more than reaching for a glass, for fumbling with locks, for shielding her face from the world. Now, they trembled, not with the shakes of withdrawal, but with a nervous anticipation.

Alex walked over to her easel, its worn wood a testament to countless hours spent lost in creation. It stood in the corner, draped in a dusty sheet, a forgotten monument to a former life. With a deep breath, she pulled the sheet away, revealing the stark white rectangle. It was a terrifying prospect, this emptiness, and yet, it was also an invitation. An invitation to begin again.
