Detective Anya Sharma’s office was a testament to organized chaos. Stacks of case files, meticulously labeled, teetered on her desk, interspersed with a half-eaten sandwich and a lukewarm mug of tea. The fluorescent lights hummed a monotonous tune, a stark contrast to the whirlwind of unease that had settled in her gut. For weeks, a peculiar pattern had been emerging in the precinct’s missing persons reports, a thread of shared peculiarity that defied easy categorization. It wasn’t the usual runaways or domestic disputes. These were individuals, seemingly unconnected, who had vanished without a trace, their last known activities revolving around obscure historical archives and forgotten data repositories.
Her fingers traced the edge of a thick manila folder, the label “The Vanishing Scholars” a grimly accurate descriptor. Inside were the profiles of five individuals: Dr. Aris Thorne, a historian specializing in ancient numerology; Miss Evelyn Reed, a freelance researcher known for her deep dives into pre-Roman civilizations; Mr. Julian Croft, a retired librarian with an insatiable appetite for historical ephemera; and two others, their faces staring out from glossy prints, their stories abruptly cut short. What linked them, Anya had discovered through painstaking cross-referencing, was a shared interest in a particular, almost forgotten, academic society: The Lumina Veritas.
The Lumina Veritas. The name itself conjured images of dusty tomes and hushed conversations. It was a society that had existed, in various forms, for centuries, its members dedicated to the esoteric pursuit of hidden knowledge. Most dismissed it as a fringe group, a haven for eccentrics. But the disappearances, coupled with the hushed whispers of hushed inquiries from certain corners of the academic world, were beginning to paint a more sinister picture.
