The afternoon sun, usually a comforting presence through the large bay window of the café, felt less like a warm embrace and more like a spotlight today. Elara clutched her lukewarm latte, the ceramic mug a cool anchor against the rising tide of unease in her stomach. The Sudoku, its grid now a battlefield of numbers and encroaching dread, lay open on the table, a stark contrast to the casual bustle of the café around her. Laughter, the clatter of dishes, the murmur of conversations – they all seemed to weave a tapestry of normalcy that felt increasingly alien.

She’d chosen this place, the bustling ‘Ink & Bean,’ for precisely that reason. Anonymity in a crowd. A place where a solitary woman hunched over a puzzle wouldn’t draw a second glance. But the nagging sensation, the prickle at the back of her neck, had been growing since she’d left her apartment. It was a feeling she’d tried to dismiss as paranoia, a side effect of too many late nights staring at glowing screens, but it persisted, a low hum beneath the surface of her consciousness.

Her eyes flickered towards the entrance, scanning the faces of those who came and went. A young couple, hands intertwined. A student with a backpack overflowing with books. A man in a crisp suit, his stride purposeful. Nothing out of the ordinary. Yet, the feeling intensified. It was as if the air itself had thickened, pressing in on her.
