She had spent the last forty-eight hours in a haze of caffeine and obsessive focus, the outside world a distant, muted rumour. Sleep had been a luxury she couldn’t afford, the phantom press of unseen eyes a constant, prickling sensation on her skin. The shadowy figures, once mere figments of her overactive imagination, had solidified into a palpable threat. She’d glimpsed them, fleetingly, in the periphery of her vision, a flicker of movement in the darkened alleyways she navigated on her rare forays for supplies, a silent car parked for too long across the street. They were patient, she knew, and their patience was a weapon.
But the isolation, once a comforting shield, was now a cage. She needed help. The thought was alien, a foreign concept that chafed against her ingrained self-reliance. Her past academic failures, the sting of being accused of intellectual dishonesty when she’d simply been right, had cemented her belief that the only person she could truly trust was herself. Yet, the magnitude of what she was uncovering, the potential for catastrophic consequences, demanded more than just her solitary brilliance. It demanded a partnership, however tentative.
